I haven't wanted to recruit a third member for drums, because we'd be too loud to play in my garage and it's easier with just the two of us. This started as a long distance, casual collaboration, so I just programmed drums myself. I have access to all my Logic effects as well in Mainstage, so there are FX busses assigned to the channel strips. I've mapped to midi from the footswitch to advance tracks and start the beats, via playback plugin. They are loaded into the playback plugin in Mainstage. The drums are from Addictive Drums extracted as a AAC file from the Logic project. I have basically 3 or 4 channel strips set up in Mainstage - Vocals, 2 Keyboard patches, and drums. I have a keyboard stand set up with my MacBook, Duet and Oxygen controller. I'm not a fan of laptop fiddling during shows, if you know what I mean. I'm the singer too and I wanted a pedal so I don't have to step away from the mic. I got the Logidy because I didn't want to hunch over a laptop in between songs and press the space bar to start the next one. Some of my influences are Rush, Battles and Dead Can Dance.and they all did a pretty good job of pulling off complicated songs live. But I'd like to think I could pull it off. If my music gets too deep with samples, I'll probably recruit a buddy to play the keyboard parts.
Looper mainstage 3 how to#
I already have a Ditto on my pedal board for guitar loops, I'd like to learn how to loop in Mainstage for keyboard loops too, using the Logidy. There's a live looping feature in it and I'm not really into the idea of just playing to backing tracks. The next round of songs are going to be more heavily sample based, so I'm going to try to push Mainstage a bit more. I have another set list with our bass players parts in it, for me to practice to while I'm alone. I have a set list with just drum loops to trigger, and some songs have keyboards. Mainstage 3 was a bit glitchy at first, but it's been fixed. At practice it works great, the 3 buttons on the Logidy are programmed for advance next song, backup last song and start/stop. I use this setup regularly, we are ready to start playing shows in a few months, we're wrapping up our first 10 songs, so no gigs yet. Man, I still thought I was the only one! It's been a while since I posted this. OnSong also has options for backing tracks, maybe even more intuitive not sure. I think the reason this app is required is that it automatically stops at the end of a song and won't advance until you hit PLAY. I still need to test this live but I have an iPad mount for a mic stand and could see simply hitting the buttons when starting the next tune. You basically load in a playlist of all of your songs (backing tracks panned L, click tracks panned right) and it simple has a huge transport PLAY/STOP/FWD. There is a very simple app calle BackTrax that looks pretty good. are all separate and outside of the computer so I feel more comfortable (at least at this point) using iPad to kick off backing tracks. My backing tracks are only click + synth style instrumentation. What I'm doing with the band is probably going iPhone / iPad route. Within those songs you can have sections that include imported WAV files (playback), patch changes on your guitar rig (I was using SGear as a plug in), possibly loops, softsynths / drums via MIDI, etc.Īnd use a foot controller to advance through all of that for a show.
So basically you have songs listed in order. What I wanted to do (which is possibly what you want to do?) is control all aspects of a show (I believe Mainstage calls it a concert). That being said MOST of the videos I saw with this setup were using Mainstage as a guitar rig ONLY. I know for sure you can assign different controls to MIDI, but I recall hunting and reading that the MIDI mate doesn't normally send MIDI notes for it's changes which is what Mainstage needs? People where mentioning using the Behringer FCB1010 to control all aspects of Mainstage and some people were very happy. Mainstage is supposed to be an easy interface but I found it extremely confusing at first blush. I was also able to get it to see my Rocktron MIDI mate (through my audio interface) which means it "should" allow me to use the MIDI mate to control anything in Ableton. I was able to get Ableton Live to create "playlists" and to advance through songs using my keyboard midi controller. I have a Rocktron MIDI mate to use with my AxeFX II (that is currently my live rig). I have toyed with this idea and I bought Mainstage ($25, NO BRAINER) and I also have Ableton Live Lite which came as a bundle with my audio interface.
